Motorcycle routes in Maine
12 routes. Each one starts at the foot of the good part; the "from" versions (NYC, Stamford, Edison, Allentown, Danbury, Hartford, Long Island) add the ride there and back.
Height of Land · ME-17
42 mi · 1h 01m
The most famous roadside view in Maine, one way: from Mexico the route follows ME-17 north along the Swift River through Roxbury and Byron, past the gorge at Coos Canyon, climbs to the Height of Land overlook above Mooselookmeguntic Lake, passes the Rangeley Lake overlook and drops to Oquossoc before finishing in Rangeley. It's 42 miles. There's nothing in between, so fuel in Rumford, Mexico or Rangeley, and don't ride it after dark: this is moose country.
Acadia · Park Loop Road & Cadillac Mountain
32 mi · 1h 29m
Acadia National Park in one loop: from the Hulls Cove Visitor Center the route climbs the Cadillac Summit Road to the top and comes back down the same way, then rides the one-way stretch of the Park Loop Road past Sand Beach, Thunder Hole and Otter Cliff, and returns north by Jordan Pond and Bubble Rock. It's 32 miles. You need a park entrance pass, and from May 20 to October 25, 2026 the summit road also needed a $6 vehicle reservation on Recreation.gov, one per motorcycle. The Park Loop Road closes from December 1 to April 14.
Grafton Notch · ME-26
55 mi · 1h 17m
Maine's notch, out and back: from Bethel the route follows ME-26 north through Newry and into Grafton Notch State Park, with Screw Auger Falls, Moose Cave and the Appalachian Trail lot under Old Speck a few steps from the road, and turns around in Upton, before ME-26 crosses into New Hampshire. It's 55 miles round trip. The park charges a day-use fee, services are in Bethel, and moose cross the road here, so don't ride it at night.
Old Canada Road · US-201
49 mi · 1h 01m
The Kennebec valley and the old road to Quebec, one way: from Bingham US-201 runs north along Wyman Lake, through Caratunk and The Forks, then leaves the river and climbs into the north woods past Parlin Pond to the Attean overlook before dropping into Jackman, where the route ends. It's 49 miles. Don't keep going north, because US-201 continues to the Canadian border. Fuel in Bingham or Jackman, and watch for moose, especially at dusk and after dark.
Maine Southern Coast
47 mi · 2h 17m
The southern Maine coast from end to end, one way: from Kittery the route follows ME-103 past Fort McClary to York Harbor, rides out to Nubble Light, takes Shore Road through Ogunquit and Wells, follows Ocean Avenue past Walker's Point in Kennebunkport, and finishes at Cape Porpoise and Biddeford Pool. It's 47 miles of beach towns and short bends. In summer expect heavy beach traffic and paid parking, and the Nubble lot is small, so the group parks in turns.
Pemaquid Peninsula
48 mi · 1h 30m
A loop around the peninsula of the lighthouse on the Maine quarter: from Damariscotta ME-129 runs south through Walpole to South Bristol and out to Christmas Cove, then the route crosses to ME-130 and rides to Pemaquid Point Light at the end of the road. It comes back through New Harbor and returns north on ME-32 by Round Pond and Bremen. It's 48 miles of easy bends between lobster harbors. In July and August, US-1 through Wiscasset, the usual way in from the south, backs up for miles.
Blue Hill, Deer Isle & Stonington
50 mi · 1h 22m
The quiet coast of Penobscot Bay: from Blue Hill the route climbs Caterpillar Hill, crosses the 1939 Deer Isle–Sedgwick suspension bridge over Eggemoggin Reach, crosses Little Deer Isle and the causeway to Deer Isle, and rides ME-15 to the working harbor of Stonington at the end of the road. It comes back the same way to the bridge and closes the loop through Sedgwick and Blue Hill Falls. It's 50 miles. The bridge is narrow and high, so cross in single file, and ME-15 has little or no shoulder.
High Peaks Loop
79 mi · 1h 53m
A loop around Maine's High Peaks: from Rangeley ME-16 runs through the woods to Stratton, then ME-27 heads down the Carrabassett valley past Sugarloaf and the Bigelow Range to Kingfield. The route comes back west on ME-142 to Phillips and on ME-4 past Smalls Falls to Rangeley. It's 79 miles without repeating a mile. Don't follow ME-27 north of Stratton, because it goes to the Canadian border at Coburn Gore. There are no services between Rangeley and Stratton, and moose are common, so ride it in daylight.
Moosehead Lake
54 mi · 1h 21m
The biggest lake in Maine, from Greenville: the route follows ME-6/15 up the west shore through Greenville Junction to Rockwood, across the water from the cliff of Mount Kineo, and comes back the same way. Then it takes Lily Bay Road up the east shore to Lily Bay State Park and returns to Greenville. It's 54 miles. North of Rockwood and east of the lake the private logging roads begin, gravel with checkpoints and fees, and they aren't part of this route. Watch for moose, and don't ride it at night.
Camden Hills & Mt. Battie
20 mi · 46 min
A short loop from Camden harbor: ME-52 runs past Megunticook Lake under Maiden Cliff to Lincolnville Center, ME-173 drops to Lincolnville Beach, and US-1 heads back south to Camden Hills State Park, where the Mt. Battie Auto Road climbs to the summit and comes back down the same way. It's 20 miles. The park charges a day-use fee, and the auto road may close from November 1 to May 1 depending on weather and staffing. The summit lot is small, so go up in turns.
Blackwoods Scenic Byway · ME-182
23 mi · 33 min
The Downeast shortcut through woods and lakes, one way: from Hancock ME-182 runs east to Franklin and then along the Blackwoods Scenic Byway between Tunk, Black and Schoodic mountains, past Fox Pond and Tunk Lake, to Cherryfield, the wild blueberry capital. It's 23 miles of narrow road with tight bends. There are few services between Franklin and Cherryfield, and the way back on US-1 is straighter and busier.
Evans Notch · ME-113
41 mi · 1h 01m
The narrowest notch in the area, from the Maine side: from Bethel the route takes US-2 west to Gilead and ME-113 south along the Wild River into Evans Notch, turns around before the New Hampshire line and comes back the same way. It's 41 miles round trip on a narrow road under the trees. ME-113 isn't maintained in winter and closes with gates until spring; in 2026 it opened on May 1. There are no services past Gilead, so fuel in Bethel, and don't ride it at night: moose.
