MOTORCYCLE ROUTES IN MAINE

Moosehead Lake

The biggest lake in Maine, from Greenville: the route follows ME-6/15 up the west shore through Greenville Junction to Rockwood, across the water from the cliff of Mount Kineo, and comes back the same way. Then it takes Lily Bay Road up the east shore to Lily Bay State Park and returns to Greenville. It's 54 miles. North of Rockwood and east of the lake the private logging roads begin, gravel with checkpoints and fees, and they aren't part of this route. Watch for moose, and don't ride it at night.

Moosehead is the largest lake in Maine, and the route starts in Greenville, at its southern end, where the Katahdin is docked. The boat was built in 1914 by Bath Iron Works, carried tourists, later towed logs, and today runs lake cruises from June to October for the Moosehead Marine Museum. The route follows ME-6/15 up the west shore to Rockwood, across the water from Mount Kineo, whose cliff rises about 700 feet straight from the lake; Thoreau climbed it in 1857. A summer boat shuttle to Kineo leaves from Rockwood.

The route turns around in Rockwood and comes back to Greenville, then takes Lily Bay Road up the east shore to Lily Bay State Park and returns. North of Rockwood and east of the lake begins the network of private logging roads, such as the Golden Road and those of North Maine Woods and the KI Jo-Mary forest: gravel, with staffed checkpoints and per-day fees paid in cash or check. They aren't part of this route, so don't follow them. Watch for moose, and don't ride it at night.
