Motorcycle routes in Vermont
10 routes. Each one starts at the foot of the good part; the "from" versions (NYC, Stamford, Edison, Allentown, Danbury, Hartford, Long Island) add the ride there and back.
Appalachian Gap & Middlebury Gap
70 mi · 1h 53m
Two Green Mountain passes in one loop: you leave Waitsfield on VT-17, climb past Mad River Glen to Appalachian Gap and drop to Bristol; from there you head south to East Middlebury, cross Middlebury Gap on VT-125 through Ripton and come back north on VT-100 through Granville Gulf and Warren. It's 70 miles of tight bends on both climbs and an easy valley ride home. The App Gap climb is steep with hairpins, so take it calmly. Fuel in Waitsfield or Bristol.
Smugglers' Notch Loop · VT-108
43 mi · 1h 18m
Vermont's most famous pass: from Stowe you take VT-108 up Mountain Road, climb Smugglers' Notch between giant boulders, drop to Jeffersonville and come back through Johnson, Hyde Park and Morrisville. It's 43 miles; the main event is the Notch, narrow and with bends so tight it turns one lane at the top. It's seasonal: VT-108 through the Notch closes every fall until May, and long vehicles and trailer combinations are banned. Check New England 511 before you go.
Molly Stark Trail · VT-9
40 mi · 1h 06m
The southern Vermont crossing on VT-9, the Molly Stark Trail: you leave Brattleboro, climb through Marlboro to the Hogback Mountain overlook, drop into Wilmington and cross the range through Searsburg and Woodford to Bennington. It's 40 miles of long climbs and open bends, with the best view right at Hogback. It's the region's main east-west road, so expect trucks and seasonal traffic. Stop in Wilmington, halfway across.
Lake Willoughby · VT-5A
47 mi · 1h 21m
A loop around Vermont's most dramatic lake: from Lyndonville you ride up to West Burke, take VT-5A along the shore of Lake Willoughby, between the cliffs of Mt Pisgah and Mt Hor, and come back on VT-16 to Barton and through Glover and Sheffield to Lyndonville. It's 47 miles of Northeast Kingdom farm country with the lake as the main event. Along the lake there are about five miles with no shoulder: stop the pack at the north and south beaches, not on the road. Fuel in Lyndonville.
The Taconics · Dorset, Rupert & Pawlet
71 mi · 1h 53m
A loop through the Taconic valleys: from Manchester Center you take VT-30 to Dorset, cross to Rupert on VT-315, ride up through West Pawlet and Pawlet, continue to Middletown Springs and Tinmouth and come back through Wallingford, Danby and East Dorset. It's 71 miles of pavement among farms, marble villages and rolling hills, with some good bends on VT-315. Watch for the dirt roads branching off on both sides and stay on the route. Manchester has roundabouts and traffic; fuel there before you go.
Kingdom State Forest & VT-102
67 mi · 1h 36m
Vermont's most remote loop: from Island Pond you ride VT-114 north through the woods to Norton, on the border, continue east to Canaan, run down VT-102 along the Connecticut River through Lemington and Bloomfield, and come back on VT-105 to Island Pond. It's 67 miles of forest, river and little else, with easy bends and light traffic. Fuel up in Island Pond, because there are no services between Canaan and VT-105. Watch for moose, and don't cross into Canada or New Hampshire.
Lake Champlain Islands · US-2
27 mi · 42 min
A ride on the water: you leave Sand Bar State Park, cross the US-2 causeway to South Hero and run the islands through Grand Isle and North Hero to Alburgh, where you take VT-129 to Isle La Motte and finish at St. Anne's Shrine. It's 27 flat miles, about scenery rather than bends, with Lake Champlain on both sides. The drawbridge between Grand Isle and North Hero opens for boats, so you may have to wait. Don't continue into New York or Canada.
Bethel Mountain Road & Woodstock
70 mi · 1h 52m
A loop through central Vermont: from Rochester you cross the mountain on Bethel Mountain Road to Bethel, run down VT-12 through Barnard to Woodstock, head back west on US-4 through Bridgewater Corners and Killington, and ride VT-100 north through Pittsfield to Rochester. It's 70 miles of mountain climb, valleys and postcard villages. Note: a little over a mile from the Rochester green, Bethel Mountain Road turns 90° to the right; go straight and you're on dirt. Fuel in Woodstock or Killington.
West River Valley · VT-30 & VT-100
64 mi · 1h 46m
The West River valley: from Brattleboro you ride VT-30 along the river through West Dummerston, Newfane and Townshend, past covered bridges and the Townshend dam, take VT-100 south through Wardsboro and West Dover to Wilmington and come back to Brattleboro on VT-9 over Hogback Mountain. It's 65 miles of river valley, mountain and villages with a green. The return on VT-9 is the same stretch as the Molly Stark Trail. The covered bridges are one lane with slippery wooden decks, so cross them carefully.
Northern VT-100 & Jay Peak
46 mi · 1h 07m
The northern stretch of VT-100 and the climb past Jay Peak: from Morrisville you ride north through Hyde Park, Eden and Lowell to Troy, cross to Jay and take VT-242 over the shoulder of Jay Peak to drop into Montgomery Center. It's 46 miles one way, with open valley at first and mountain bends at the end. Don't take VT-58 over Hazen's Notch: it's dirt. The pavement on VT-242 is uneven, and Canada is a few miles from Troy. Fuel in Morrisville.
