Motorcycle routes in New Jersey
10 routes. Each one starts at the foot of the good part; the "from NYC" and "from Stamford" versions add the ride there and back.
Skyline, Wanaque & Clinton Road
33 mi · 1h 06m
The closest real mountain curves to the GW Bridge: Skyline Drive climbs through the Ramapo woods, then you trace the Wanaque and Monksville reservoirs, and Clinton Road drops through dark, tight forest along the Clinton Reservoir. Mid-radius blind corners, very few straights, and almost no towns until Newfoundland. Good for a half-day or a long after-work ride. Watch for cyclists and police on Skyline, and for potholes and gravel on Clinton Road, which draws sightseers after dark.
Route 519 · Phillipsburg to High Point
54 mi · 1h 34m
The rural backbone of northwest Jersey: Phillipsburg to High Point through farmland, rolling hills and long sweepers that flow one into the next, by way of Hope, Branchville and Wantage. It's a steady-rhythm ride, more scenery than technique, ending at the highest point in the state. Works for a mixed pack, newer riders included. Expect rough patches, tractors and deer, and speed enforcement through the towns.
Route 23 · High Point & Port Jervis
43 mi · 1h 19m
The natural way out of North Jersey toward the Delaware: NJ-23 sheds the traffic at Hamburg and past Sussex opens into wide sweepers that climb to High Point and drop into Port Jervis. From there it links straight onto Hawk's Nest (NY-97) for a full day. It's a transit ride with a strong finish, not a technical one. The first half has lights and traffic, and unmarked patrol cars are common.
River Road · NJ-29 along the Delaware
22 mi · 44 min
NJ-29 hugs the Delaware from Washington Crossing to Frenchtown, river on one side and rock wall on the other, through Lambertville and Stockton. Easy pace, gentle bends and plenty of spots to stop for food or cross over to New Hope. It's a group scenery ride, not one to push. Lambertville gets packed on weekends, and the road sometimes closes for flooding or rockfall, so check 511NJ before heading out.
Blairstown & Swartswood
37 mi · 1h 08m
A loop through the lake country of Sussex and Warren: Blairstown to Stillwater, along Swartswood Lake, and back through Johnsonburg and Hope. Narrow rural roads with rolling curves, farms and water around every few bends, and Blairstown is a classic bike stop for coffee. Good for a pack that wants a relaxed ride that still holds your attention. Watch for gravel in the corners and stretches with no shoulder.
Stokes & Sunrise Mountain
22 mi · 42 min
From Branchville up US-206 to Culvers Gap, then Sunrise Mountain Road along the Kittatinny ridge inside Stokes State Forest, down Crigger Road and Deckertown Turnpike to High Point. It's the wildest corner of the state: deep woods, short tight corners and a narrow road that goes single-lane in places. For experienced riders at a touring pace. Sunrise Mountain Road closes in winter; the overlook sits on a short spur worth a detour.
CR-513 · Chester to Frenchtown
31 mi · 59 min
CR-513 runs end to end across rural Hunterdon: Chester, Long Valley, Califon, High Bridge, Clinton and Pittstown, finishing on the Delaware at Frenchtown. A mix of valleys, historic towns and open bends, with good stops in Califon and Clinton. Works as a relaxed day ride or as a link to NJ-29. The towns have low limits and Califon is tight, so take it easy there.
Musconetcong River Road
20 mi · 42 min
From Oldwick through Fairmount and Califon to the Musconetcong River, then River Road right along the water to Hampton. Back-to-back curves, a lane-and-a-half road and the river always in view: short, but one of the most fun rides in Hunterdon. For a small pack that wants curves without riding all day. Expect cyclists and almost no shoulder; ride single file on the narrow parts.
Pine Barrens · Chatsworth & Batsto
51 mi · 1h 10m
A loop through the Pine Barrens: Tabernacle to Chatsworth, CR-563 through Wharton State Forest to Green Bank, Batsto Village, and back on US-206. It's flat and straight, but it looks like nothing else in the region: pine forest, sand, dark-water creeks and towns from another era. For clubs in Central and South Jersey, or for a change of scenery. Services are scarce for long stretches (fuel up first), sand collects on the shoulders, and the long straights make it easy for the group to spread out.
Rumson, Sea Bright & the Navesink
19 mi · 53 min
A short coastal loop: Rumson to Sea Bright, Ocean Avenue between the ocean and the river, Highlands, the woods of Hartshorne, and back along Navesink River Road to Red Bank. Gentle curves, water everywhere and views of the Manhattan skyline from the Highlands heights. A cruising pace, made for Monmouth County clubs or a summer evening. Beach season brings heavy traffic through Sea Bright; Sandy Hook is left out (it's out-and-back and charges for parking in summer).
