Motorcycle routes in South Carolina
7 routes. Each one starts at the foot of the good part; the "from" versions (NYC, Stamford, Edison, Allentown, Danbury, Hartford, Long Island) add the ride there and back.
Caesars Head & Table Rock
68 mi · 1h 52m
South Carolina's real mountain climb in one loop: from Travelers Rest the route takes US-276 through Cleveland and up the hairpins past Wildcat Wayside to Caesars Head State Park, where it turns around because the road continues into North Carolina. Back down, it follows SC-11 west past the Grant Meadow overlook below Table Rock, then US-178 to Pickens and SC-183 home. It's 68 miles. There's no fuel or food at the top, and the park lot fills on fall weekends.
Walhalla · SC-130, SC-413 & SC-107
45 mi · 1h 11m
The curvy corner of the Cherokee Foothills in one loop, all in South Carolina: from Walhalla the route takes SC-11 and SC-130 north, turns west on SC-413 past the Wigington Overlook above Lake Jocassee, and comes back south on SC-107 through the Sumter National Forest, past Oconee State Park, and on SC-28 by Stumphouse Tunnel. It's 45 miles. It turns before SC-130 and SC-107 cross into North Carolina, and the gravel Burrells Ford Road isn't part of the route.
Cherokee Foothills · Keowee & Jocassee
39 mi · 56 min
The lake half of the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, one way: from Table Rock State Park the route follows SC-11 west past the Grant Meadow overlook and Keowee-Toxaway State Park, takes a short out-and-back spur to Devils Fork State Park on Lake Jocassee, and ends in Walhalla. It's 39 miles. This is a scenery road more than a curvy one, with RVs and boat trailers in summer. Devils Fork charges admission and gets long entry lines on weekends.
Lake Murray & the Dam
63 mi · 1h 40m
The Columbia clubs' lake ride in one loop: from Lexington the route takes US-378 west, SC-391 north across the far end of Lake Murray to Prosperity, US-76 east through Little Mountain and Chapin, and SC-6 south across the Dreher Shoals Dam back to Lexington. It's 63 miles of smooth rolling road, good for a large or new pack. Expect traffic lights around Lexington and Irmo, and the dam lots fill on weekends.
Ashley River Road · SC-61
22 mi · 42 min
Charleston's oak tunnel, one way: from West Ashley the route follows SC-61, the Ashley River Road, past Drayton Hall, Magnolia and Middleton Place under live oaks hung with Spanish moss, then takes SC-165 to Summerville. It's 22 miles. The three plantations charge admission. The first stretch in West Ashley has four lanes and city traffic, and from June to September expect heat and mosquitoes.
Edisto Island Scenic Byway · SC-174
42 mi · 55 min
The Edisto Island Scenic Byway, out and back: from US-17 the route follows SC-174 south through Adams Run, crosses the Dawhoo River on the McKinley Washington Jr. Bridge, runs through the marshes and oaks of Edisto Island and turns around at Edisto Beach State Park. It's 42 miles round trip, and there's no other way off the island. Expect crosswind on the bridge and beach traffic in summer. Botany Bay is a dirt road and isn't part of the route.
Old Sheldon Church, Beaufort & Hunting Island
40 mi · 59 min
The Lowcountry from end to end, one way: from Yemassee the route follows Old Sheldon Church Road through the woods past the ruins of the 18th-century church, crosses the marsh on US-21 into Beaufort, then runs over Lady's Island and St. Helena Island to Hunting Island State Park. It's 40 miles. The park charges admission, downtown Beaufort is slow with tight parking, and Fripp Island beyond Hunting Island is private, so the route ends at the park.
