Motorcycle routes in West Virginia
11 routes. Each one starts at the foot of the good part; the "from" versions (NYC, Stamford, Edison, Allentown, Danbury, Hartford, Long Island) add the ride there and back.
Highland Scenic Highway · WV-150
45 mi · 1h 14m
The highest road in West Virginia, in a loop from Marlinton: the route heads south on US-219 to Mill Point, climbs WV-39 to the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center and then rides the whole Highland Scenic Highway (WV-150), 22.5 miles of ridge with its overlooks, before dropping to US-219 near Edray and back to Marlinton. It's 45 miles. There are no services on WV-150, so fuel in Marlinton. WV-150 isn't plowed in winter and closes with snow: ride it from May to October.
Seneca Rocks via US-33
60 mi · 1h 26m
US-33 across the Potomac Highlands, one way: from Elkins the route rides east through Alpena and Harman to Seneca Rocks, then climbs North Fork Mountain past the Germany Valley overlook and drops to Franklin. It's 60 miles. Fog often settles in Germany Valley and cattle graze along the valley roads. The route ends in Franklin on purpose: east of town US-33 climbs Shenandoah Mountain into Virginia.
Canaan Valley to Seneca Rocks
34 mi · 49 min
From the mountain towns of Thomas and Davis to Seneca Rocks, one way: the route follows WV-32 south through Canaan Valley, past the national wildlife refuge visitor center, down to Harman, and takes US-33 east to Seneca Rocks. It's 34 miles. Don't take WV-72 (Dry Fork Road) as a shortcut: it's a one-lane road. Watch for deer in the valley at dawn and dusk.
Seneca Trail · US-219 to Lewisburg
41 mi · 1h 07m
The Seneca Trail south, one way: from Marlinton the route follows US-219 through Hillsboro, where Pearl S. Buck was born, climbs Droop Mountain past the battlefield state park and its lookout tower, and rolls on through Renick and Frankford to finish in Lewisburg. It's 41 miles. Let local traffic by on the climbs, and expect traffic lights and tight parking in Lewisburg on festival weekends.
Snowshoe, Cass & Green Bank
74 mi · 2h 11m
Snowshoe, Cass and Green Bank in one loop from Marlinton: the route goes north on US-219 to Slatyfork, takes WV-66 and climbs to the Snowshoe village at the top of the mountain and back down the same road, drops to the old logging town of Cass, follows WV-28 to Green Bank and returns by Dunmore and Huntersville. It's 74 miles. Green Bank sits in the National Radio Quiet Zone: there's little or no cell signal, so download the route and the map before you go.
New River Gorge & Hawks Nest
37 mi · 1h 05m
The New River Gorge from the top, in a loop from Fayetteville: the route crosses the gorge on the US-19 bridge, passes the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, turns west on US-60 at Hico and follows the Midland Trail through Ansted and Hawks Nest State Park to Gauley Bridge, and returns south on WV-16. It's 37 miles. It doesn't use Fayette Station Road: its one-way stretch was closed from January 12 to March 31, 2026 for work on the Tunney Hunsaker Bridge, and we couldn't confirm the reopening.
WV-20 · Princeton, Pipestem & Hinton
45 mi · 1h 21m
WV-20 from Princeton to Hinton and up the New River: the route rides north through Athens, past Pipestem Resort State Park and Bluestone Dam into the railroad town of Hinton, then follows New River Road north toward Sandstone Falls, turns back about a kilometer short of the boardwalk parking and returns to Hinton the same way. It's 45 miles. Expect coal and logging trucks on WV-20, and fuel in Princeton or Hinton.
Midland Trail · US-60 East
69 mi · 1h 50m
The Midland Trail east, one way: from Hawks Nest the route follows US-60 through Ansted, crosses the mountains to Rainelle and Sam Black Church, goes through Lewisburg and finishes in White Sulphur Springs, home of The Greenbrier. It's 69 miles. There are straight stretches and towns with traffic lights along the way. The route ends in White Sulphur Springs: east of there US-60 heads into Virginia.
WV-20 · Buckhannon to Webster Springs
53 mi · 1h 23m
WV-20 through the middle of the state, one way: from Buckhannon the route heads south past French Creek, home of the West Virginia Wildlife Center, and through Hacker Valley to Webster Springs, where the Back Fork meets the Elk River. It's 53 miles of curves with few services in between, so fuel in Buckhannon. Don't take Alexander Road as a shortcut: it's narrow and twisty.
US-50 · Romney to Mount Storm
34 mi · 48 min
The old Northwestern Turnpike, one way: from Romney the route follows US-50 west through the Patterson Creek valley to Burlington and climbs the Allegheny Front to Mount Storm. It's 34 miles. It's a through route with heavy trucks, and the wind blows hard on the Allegheny Front. The route ends in Mount Storm on purpose: west of there US-50 crosses a stretch of Maryland.
Spruce Knob · West Virginia High Point
27 mi · 1h 07m
Up to the roof of West Virginia and back: from Riverton the route takes US-33 and Briery Gap Road to Forest Road 112 and Forest Road 104, climbs to the parking lot below the Spruce Knob summit, 4,863 feet, and comes back down the same way. It's 27 miles. The forest roads are paved but narrow, single-lane in places: ride up in single file and with care. Past the FR 104 turnoff FR 112 turns to gravel, and the route doesn't go there. There are no services, and the roads aren't kept up in winter.
