Old Canada Road · US-201
The Kennebec valley and the old road to Quebec, one way: from Bingham US-201 runs north along Wyman Lake, through Caratunk and The Forks, then leaves the river and climbs into the north woods past Parlin Pond to the Attean overlook before dropping into Jackman, where the route ends. It's 49 miles. Don't keep going north, because US-201 continues to the Canadian border. Fuel in Bingham or Jackman, and watch for moose, especially at dusk and after dark.
North of Solon, US-201 is the Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway, designated in 2000. The road follows old river trading routes of the Abenaki, and in 1775 Benedict Arnold's army marched along this corridor on its failed expedition to Quebec. From Bingham the route follows the Kennebec north past Wyman Lake, where a roadside picnic area has covered tables, toilets and a view down the length of the lake, and on through Caratunk to The Forks, the center of rafting on the Kennebec.
After The Forks the road leaves the river and climbs into the north woods past Parlin Pond. Just before Jackman it tops out at the Attean overlook, a rest area with a wide view over Attean Pond, and then drops into town, where the route ends. It's a one-way route; north of Jackman, US-201 runs to the Canadian border, so don't follow it. The stretch north of The Forks is known as moose alley: watch for moose, especially at dusk and after dark, and fuel in Bingham or Jackman.
