Seneca Rocks via US-33
US-33 across the Potomac Highlands, one way: from Elkins the route rides east through Alpena and Harman to Seneca Rocks, then climbs North Fork Mountain past the Germany Valley overlook and drops to Franklin. It's 60 miles. Fog often settles in Germany Valley and cattle graze along the valley roads. The route ends in Franklin on purpose: east of town US-33 climbs Shenandoah Mountain into Virginia.
From Elkins, US-33 climbs east into the Potomac Highlands through Alpena and Harman and drops to the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac at Seneca Rocks. The rock rises nearly 900 feet above the spot where Seneca Creek meets the North Fork, and the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center sits at the foot of it, at the junction of US-33 and WV-55, with a view of the wall from the grounds.
South of Seneca Rocks the route passes Judy Gap and climbs North Fork Mountain to the Germany Valley overlook, a pull-off above the valley that German farmers settled in the mid-1700s. From there US-33 drops to Franklin, where the route ends. It's a one-way ride; east of Franklin US-33 climbs Shenandoah Mountain and enters Virginia. Fog often fills Germany Valley in the morning, and cattle graze along the valley roads.
