These three are jobs on one ride, not ranks. They are picked per ride and can be different people next weekend — your rank in the club does not give you any of them.
Road captain — leads
- The only one who changes the route: rerouting, adding and skipping stops.
- The only one who ends the ride for everybody. Rank in the club is not enough — a President who is not the RC of that ride does not get END RIDE.
- If nobody is named, it is whoever created the ride.
Tail gunner — closes the formation
- Rides last so nobody is left behind.
- Pack watches the gap between riders along the route and warns the whole group when somebody falls too far back. The default is 800 m, and a ride can be set to its own number.
- A phone that goes quiet is not treated as dropped: a frozen position in a pocket is not a rider who stopped.
Scout — rides ahead
- Goes out in front on purpose to read what is coming.
- Because of that, the scout is taken out of the drop detection — otherwise the banner would call them dropped the whole ride.
- Instead the app measures how far ahead of the road captain they are, along the route, and tells the RC at 3 km ahead (clearing again under 2.5 km) or if they end up behind the RC — they stopped and the pack went past.
Losing signal never changes the scout's state. Not hearing from someone is not the same as them moving.
