iPhone: keep transmitting with the phone away

Set Location to Always and Precise. What iOS does when the screen is locked.

iOS is friendlier than Android here, but it still needs one setting:

  1. 1Settings → Pack → Location
  2. 2Pick Always
  3. 3Turn Precise Location on

In Pack, Settings → bottom of the screen, the grey line should read GPS: always ✓ · task ON · background during a ride.

What we measured in the field

  • Phone stowed, bike moving, screen locked — works. This is the case that matters and it is the one we tested most.
  • Another app in front — works.
  • Locked and parked for several minutes — iOS can put the app to sleep and your dot stops updating. You are not moving, so the dot is still in the right place; it catches up when you wake the screen.

IF IOS KILLS PACK MID-RIDE

It happens — iOS reclaims memory from apps in the background. Pack notices and rebuilds the ride tracking by itself, without you touching anything.
