Lincoln Highway · US-30 Latrobe to Schellsburg
The Lincoln Highway through the Laurel Highlands: you leave Latrobe on US-30, pass through Ligonier and Laughlintown, climb Laurel Ridge, continue through Jennerstown and Stoystown, pass the entrance to the Flight 93 National Memorial and finish in Schellsburg, next to Shawnee State Park. It's 49 miles of wide road with long climbs and open curves, good for any pack. There's fuel and food in almost every town. The route stays on US-30 and doesn't touch the PA-711 closure in Ligonier Township.
Latrobe, where this stretch of the Lincoln Highway begins, is the hometown of Fred Rogers and Arnold Palmer, and it claims the banana split, created in 1904 by a pharmacy student at a local drugstore. East of Ligonier, the Compass Inn in Laughlintown dates to 1799 and was a stagecoach stop from 1820 to 1862; it's now a museum that opens Tuesday through Sunday from May to October. US-30 then climbs over Laurel Ridge to Jennerstown, where the Mountain Playhouse, founded in 1939 in an old gristmill, is Pennsylvania's oldest professional summer theater.
Past Stoystown is the entrance to the Flight 93 National Memorial, right on US-30 at 6424 Lincoln Highway; the grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset. Farther east, about 17 miles west of Bedford, is Grand View Point, where the Ship Hotel advertised views of three states and seven counties until it burned in 2001; the view is still there. The route ends at Schellsburg, next to Shawnee State Park and its 451-acre lake, whose beach is open from late May to mid-September.
