Tamiami Trail · Everglades
The Tamiami Trail (US-41) across the Everglades, one way: from Krome Avenue the route rides west past Shark Valley, the Oasis Visitor Center in Big Cypress, the Kirby Storter and H.P. Williams boardwalks and the Ochopee post office, then turns south on SR-29 to Everglades City. It's 62 miles of sawgrass and cypress, flat and straight. Services are few: fuel at either end. It stays on US-41 and doesn't take Loop Road, which is partly dirt. Watch for wildlife on the road, and don't ride it at night.
US-41, the Tamiami Trail, runs straight across the Everglades between Miami and the Gulf coast. From Krome Avenue the route rides west past the Miccosukee lands to Shark Valley, an entrance to Everglades National Park that charges an entrance fee if you go in. Farther west it enters Big Cypress National Preserve: the Oasis Visitor Center has a large lot and a boardwalk along the canal in front, where alligators, turtles and birds gather, best in the dry season from about November to May.
Past Oasis the route passes the Kirby Storter boardwalk, about a mile round trip into a cypress swamp, the H.P. Williams roadside park, and the Ochopee post office, which USPS lists as the smallest in the country at 61.3 square feet. At Carnestown it turns south on SR-29 to Everglades City. It's a one-way ride of 62 miles, flat and straight, with fuel only at the ends. The route stays on US-41 and doesn't take Loop Road, which is partly dirt and gravel. Wildlife crosses the road, including the Florida panther in Big Cypress, so don't ride it at night.
