Pine Mountain & FDR State Park

The only ridge road in central Georgia, in one loop from Pine Mountain: the route takes GA-354 and GA-190 along the crest of Pine Mountain through F.D. Roosevelt State Park, continues to Manchester, comes back through Warm Springs, where Roosevelt's Little White House stands, and returns to Pine Mountain. It's 36 miles. Summers are very hot, park visitors fill GA-190 on weekends, and the spur road to Dowdell's Knob isn't part of the route.

Pine Mountain is a long ridge in west central Georgia, and F.D. Roosevelt State Park covers about 9,000 acres of it, the largest state park in Georgia. Roosevelt first came to Warm Springs in 1924 looking for relief from polio, and in the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps built stone cabins and a swimming pool shaped like the Liberty Bell in the park. From the town of Pine Mountain the route takes GA-354 and then GA-190 along the crest, with views over the valley from the pull-offs.

GA-190 continues east to Manchester, and the route turns back through Warm Springs, where Roosevelt built the Little White House in 1932 and where he died in 1945; the Bulloch House serves a southern buffet on Broad Street. The route returns to Pine Mountain through the valley. Dowdell's Knob, the overlook where Roosevelt picnicked and where a bronze statue of him has stood since 2007, is at the end of a spur road off GA-190 that isn't part of the route. Summers are very hot, and park visitors fill GA-190 on weekends.
