Longhouse National Scenic Byway · Kinzua

A loop around the Kinzua bay in the Allegheny National Forest: you leave Red Bridge on PA-321, take Longhouse Scenic Drive along the west shore, pass Elijah Run and the turn for Jakes Rocks, reach PA-59 by Kinzua Beach, cross the bay on the bridge and come back on PA-321. It's 30 miles of curves with the water always alongside, good for a mixed pack. The route doesn't go into the Jakes Rocks or Rimrock overlooks, which are dead-end spurs. PA-321 and PA-59 have no shoulder.

The Longhouse National Scenic Byway circles the Kinzua Creek arm of the Allegheny Reservoir, in the Allegheny National Forest. The reservoir exists because of Kinzua Dam, finished in 1965 for flood control on the Allegheny River. Its waters reach almost to Salamanca, New York, and they flooded most of the Cornplanter Tract in Pennsylvania and about a third of the Seneca Nation's Allegany Reservation, forcing more than 600 Seneca to move. The route follows the Forest Service loop: Red Bridge, Longhouse Drive past Dewdrop and Elijah Run, and back along the bay on PA-59 and PA-321.

On PA-59, Kinzua Point Information Center has an overlook up the reservoir and is usually staffed by volunteers on summer weekends. Jakes Rocks and Rimrock, the two big overlooks of the byway, sit at the end of dead-end side roads that this route doesn't take; Jakes Rocks is open as a day-use site from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. if you want to add it. The Forest Service lists Forest Road 154 as closed for a bridge replacement, but it isn't part of the loop. Nearby, the Kinzua Bridge Skywalk closes after October 31, 2026 for rehabilitation work that DCNR expects to finish by the 2027 foliage season.
