Lake Rabun, Seed & Burton Loop
Three lakes in one loop from Lakemont: the route follows Lake Rabun Road along the shore past Rabun Beach, crosses at Seed Lake, rides county roads up the east side of Lake Burton to US-76 and comes back through Clayton on US-441. It's 31 miles. The lake roads are narrow, with no shoulder and houses and docks right at the edge, so it suits a small pack. Between Clayton and Wiley, US-441 is four lanes.
Lake Rabun, Seed Lake and Lake Burton are three of the six reservoirs Georgia Power built on the Tallulah River. Lake Rabun's Mathis Dam was finished in 1915, but the lake waited about ten years to fill, until the tunnel to the powerhouse at Tallulah Falls was done. From Lakemont the route follows Lake Rabun Road along the shore, past the Lake Rabun Hotel, open since 1922, and past Rabun Beach, a Forest Service recreation area with a paved lot, a boat ramp and a swimming beach.
At Seed Lake the route crosses near Nacoochee Dam and climbs on county roads up the east side of Lake Burton to US-76, then heads east to Clayton and back south on US-441 to Lakemont. The lake roads are narrow and have no shoulder, with houses and docks right at the edge, so this loop suits a small pack. The stretch of US-441 between Clayton and Wiley is four lanes.
