A1A · St. Augustine to Flagler Beach

A1A from St. Augustine to Flagler Beach, one way: from the Castillo de San Marcos the route crosses the Bridge of Lions to Anastasia Island and rides south past Fort Matanzas, Matanzas Inlet, Marineland and Washington Oaks to the Flagler Beach pier. It's 32 miles of dunes and ocean, flat and with no toll. FDOT is replacing the St. Augustine seawall between the Bridge of Lions and Charlotte Street until fall 2027, with night lane closures. Downtown St. Augustine is slow, and Bike Week and Biketoberfest fill Flagler.

The route starts at the Castillo de San Marcos, built by Spain between 1672 and 1695 and the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. It crosses Matanzas Bay on the Bridge of Lions to Anastasia Island and heads south on A1A between the dunes and the river. Fort Matanzas, a small Spanish fort built between 1740 and 1742 on Rattlesnake Island, about 14 miles south of the Castillo, has its visitor center and parking right on A1A, and just south of it the road crosses Matanzas Inlet.

Past Marineland the route reaches Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, whose ocean-side lot gives access to a beach of coquina rock; the park charges $5 per vehicle. Then A1A runs right along the ocean to the Flagler Beach pier. It's a one-way ride of 32 miles, flat, with no toll. Since June 2026 FDOT has been replacing the seawall along A1A between the Bridge of Lions and Charlotte Street in St. Augustine, with work through fall 2027 and lane closures only at night. The buried seawall that protects A1A at Flagler Beach is finished. Downtown St. Augustine is slow, and Bike Week and Biketoberfest fill Flagler.
