US-58 The Twist · Damascus to Grayson Highlands

US-58 at the foot of Virginia's highest peaks, one way: from Damascus the route follows Whitetop Laurel Creek up through Konnarock and Whitetop, passes the entrance to Grayson Highlands State Park and drops through Volney to finish in Mouth of Wilson. It's 38 miles. The curves are tight and services are few, so fuel up in Damascus, and watch for cyclists in town. The road runs close to the Tennessee and North Carolina lines: stay on US-58 and don't take turns to the south.

From Damascus, a trail town where the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Creeper Trail cross, US-58 climbs east along Whitetop Laurel Creek through Konnarock and Whitetop, at the foot of Mount Rogers, which at 5,729 feet is the highest point in Virginia, and Whitetop Mountain. Hurricane Helene washed out a 1.5-mile stretch of US-58 between Damascus and Konnarock in September 2024; VDOT rebuilt it and reopened it on May 22, 2025. The upper half of the Creeper Trail beside the road, Damascus to Whitetop, is still being rebuilt: the Forest Service has set its reopening for March 31, 2027.

Past Whitetop the road reaches the entrance to Grayson Highlands State Park, known for the wild ponies on its high meadows, and drops through Volney to Mouth of Wilson. The curves are tight and services are few, so fuel up in Damascus, and watch for cyclists in town and on the shoulder. Near Damascus the road runs close to the Tennessee line, and at Mouth of Wilson close to North Carolina: stay on US-58 and don't take side roads south. It's a one-way route.
