The Rattler · NC-209
The Rattler, one way: from Lake Junaluska the route follows NC-209 north through Fines Creek, past the general store at Trust and through Spring Creek, two mountain climbs on a narrow, curvy road, and ends in Hot Springs on the French Broad River. It's 36 miles. Rain washes gravel into the curves and some of them tighten halfway through, and you'll share the road with hay and cattle trucks. Hot Springs was hit hard by Helene in 2024. Come back the same way or by Marshall.
NC-209 runs north from the Lake Junaluska area toward the French Broad River, and riders call it The Rattler. It climbs out of the valley through Fines Creek, crosses the mountains to Trust, where the general store stands at the corner of NC-209 and NC-63, and drops through Spring Creek before the last climb to Hot Springs. It's a narrow road with little traffic, but rain washes gravel into the curves, some curves tighten halfway through, and hay and cattle trucks use it.
Hot Springs sits on the French Broad River, and the Appalachian Trail runs right through town. Hurricane Helene hit the town hard in 2024, and it's still rebuilding, so check fuel and food before counting on them. The route is one way: north of Hot Springs, US-25/70 heads into Tennessee, so come back on NC-209 or ride east to Marshall.
